After the cancellation of the biggest Swiss watch fairs – Watches & Wonders and Baselworld – due to COVID-19, several watch brands, including Bvlgari, Breitling, Ulysse Nardin, Girard-Perregaux and Mb&F, came together to create the Geneva Watch Days , an independent event with the support of the Canton of Geneva.
This multi-brand, decentralized and independent watchmaking event will take place in several luxury hotels in Geneva from 26 to 29 April, on the dates initially planned by Watches & Wonders.
The initiative was presented on Monday evening by Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of Bvlgari, who explained that “despite the cancellation of the two main watchmaking fairs, this event will allow retailers and media, mainly from Europe, but not only, discover, to comment and order the novelties of the founding brands, such as Breitling, Bvlgari, Gerald Genta, Girard-Perregaux, MB&F, Ulysse Nardin, De Bethune and Urwerk ”.
The brands responsible for the event will create a Steering Committee, responsible for negotiating the best potential showrooms and hotel rates. The Commission will also contact and work closely with the State and the City of Geneva and the relevant institutions to ensure maximum safety and health protection for the participants.
According to a statement sent to the newsrooms, “the Geneva Watch Days event is not intended to replace the historic Geneva Watches & Wonders and Baselworld in the long term, but presents an efficient alternative on a smaller scale, given the changing environment in 2020. It ensures visibility for novelties of the founding brands and fight against the slowdown that prevails in the watchmaking sector in recent years, reinforced since February by the Covid-19 pandemic “.
The Geneva Watch Days event has the full support of the Canton of Geneva, as explained by Pierre Maudet, Geneva State Councilor: “We fully support this initiative, especially after the cancellation of the Geneva Motor Show and the Watches & Wonders Fair. Although the scale of this event is not comparable, it will contribute significantly to Geneva’s economy during a period that would otherwise have been very challenging. We will provide all possible support to the participating brands and thank them for choosing Geneva as the venue for the event ”.
